I'm not sure why it took me so long to start hiking, but the first time I
climbed a mountain was in August 2000 at age 35. On a whim, I decided to climb Mount Monadnock and there has been no turning back. In the two years since, I've
been
on many day-hikes and a few overnight trips. Each time I hit the trail, I enjoy
the scenery, the solitude and the physical challenge.
Overnight Trips
Here are trip reports for some of the overnight hiking trips I
have taken.
- Mount Moosilauke
- Zealand-Bonds Loop
- Nancy Pond Trail to Norcross Pond
- Nancy Pond Trail to Mount Carrigain
- Franconia Ridge - Garfield Ridge - Bonds Loop
- Mount Tom
My Favorite Places to Hike
In the last year, Seth and I had our first exposure to canoe racing when we
entered the 9-mile recreational race at the Run of the Charles. The race was held
on a miserable rainy day, yet we had a lot of fun.
In the coming year, we plan to enter this and a few other races. We may even
attempt a 70-mile one-day race on the Susquehenna River.
Hiking With Children
What I find particularly satisfying is that both of my children also enjoy
hiking. Both Calvin and Caroline have gone with me on some day hikes.
Being older, Calvin has even come with me on a couple of overnight hikes. I
find the key to hiking with children is to keep it fun and exciting and always
be ready to call it a day when they've had enough. After all, it won't be long
until you'll be
the one asking them to call it a day.
Here are some places I like to take the kids:
- Wapack Trail (www.wapack.org)
This trail runs from Route 119 in Ashburnham to the north summit of Pack
Monadnock.
- Pack Monadnock
The easiest way to reach Pack Monadnock is from Miller State Park on Route 101.
- Mount Monadnock
- Mount Kearsarge (south)
It's confusing, but there are actually two mountains in New Hampshire, which
have the name 'Kearsarge'.
Keeping Well Informed
I may be a bit obsessive, but I like to be well-informed before hitting the trail.
Here is where I go for information.
